Iron vs. Steel vs. Aluminum Gates: Which Material Is Right?
How iron, steel, and aluminum gates compare on weight, longevity, and finish — and which one fits your project.
Wrought iron
Heavy, traditional, and very strong. The classic look most people picture when they hear "custom gate." Needs heavier hinges and operators sized for the weight.
Steel
Strong and versatile. Tube steel construction lets us build clean modern profiles or traditional designs at a sensible weight. Powder-coated steel performs well in Bay Area weather.
Aluminum
Lightest of the three and corrosion-resistant. Easier on operators and hinges, especially for long spans. Aluminum extrusions can mimic many ornamental looks at a lower weight.
How to choose
- Want the most traditional look? Iron.
- Want clean modern lines without the weight penalty? Steel.
- Long span or want lightest possible load on the operator? Aluminum.
