Sliding vs. Swing Driveway Gates: How to Choose
A practical comparison of sliding and swing driveway gates, including when each one wins.
Most Bay Area homeowners come to us asking for a swing gate because that's what they've seen most often. Swing gates are usually the right answer — but not always. Here's how to think it through.
When swing gates win
- Flat or gently sloped driveways
- Plenty of swing clearance inside the property
- Residential cycle counts (a few dozen a day)
- Designs that benefit visually from a centered split
When sliding gates win
- Steep driveways where a swing arc would scrape
- Tight or short driveways with no swing room
- High daily cycle counts (commercial or busy multi-family entries)
- Properties where you don't want a gate visible mid-driveway
Cost differences
Sliding gates often need a longer overall gate (to overlap the opening) and either a track or cantilever counter-balance, which can move material cost up. Swing gates typically need two operators for dual-leaf installs. We quote both options when site conditions don't clearly favor one.
