UL 325 Gate Safety Basics: What Every Owner Should Know

What UL 325 actually requires, why older gates often miss the mark, and how to bring a system into compliance.

UL 325 is the U.S. safety standard for automatic vehicular gate systems. In plain language: it defines how an automatic gate has to detect, and respond to, things in its path.

Core requirements

  • Primary entrapment protection built into the operator
  • Secondary entrapment protection (photo eyes and/or edge sensors) covering each entrapment zone
  • Warning signs visible at the gate
  • Manual disconnect that's safe to use

Where older gates miss

  • Photo eyes missing on one side
  • Edge sensors only on the leading edge, not the trailing edge
  • Force settings cranked too high to overcome a binding gate
  • Faded or missing warning signage

How to fix it

Most non-compliant gates can be brought to standard by adding the missing safety devices, tuning the operator, and adding signage — without replacing the gate or operator.
